In The Social Contract, Rousseau argues that laws are binding only when they are supported by the general will of the people. What is the General Will? Later in the text, he writes that “whoever refuses to obey the general will be forced to do so by the entire body…he will be forced to be free” (emphasis added). Does he contradict himself or can these seemingly opposite stances be reconciled?
